An order shipped by a supplier on SinoAli: about 28 tonnes of wear-resistant steel plate to the Philippines, and how heavy plate is held in place inside a container.
- Product: wear-resistant steel plate
- Destination: the Philippines
- Quantity: about 28 tonnes
- Shipping: by container
In our case notes we do not name buyers or suppliers, or show prices.
Why heavy plate needs securing
A stack of thick plate is very heavy for its size. If it slides when the ship rolls, it can damage the container and the plates themselves. So the stacks have to be held in place in every direction.
How the plates were loaded
1. Laid flat. The plates were laid flat, in stacks, on the container floor.
2. Timber on the stacks. Timber beams were laid on the stacks and fixed at the ends.

3. Tied down. Steel wire ropes with clamps tie the stacks down, with protectors where the ropes pass over the plate edges.

4. Blocked at the doors. Timber frames were built at the door end so the stacks cannot slide back.

What to ask your supplier
For heavy plate in containers, ask before loading:
- How many tonnes go in each container, and how the weight is spread over the floor.
- How the stacks will be blocked and tied down.
- Photos of each container before the doors close.
For what to check before you pay the balance, see our buyer guides.
