Acceptable Quality Carbon Steel Pipe, Packaging Issue Resolved
Ordered 8 tons of ASTM A53 Gr.B ERW pipe, 88.9mm OD x 5.49mm wall, for fire protection sprinkler installations across three commercial sites in Ontario. Material quality was acceptable — chemical and mechanical properties on the 3.1 certificates were within ASTM A53 requirements, and the pipes passed our incoming hydrostatic test checks. However, approximately 15% of the bundle arrived with damaged plastic end caps, exposing the pipe ends to moisture during transit. We found minor surface rust on the exposed ends of around 12 pieces. After raising this with the supplier, they responded within one business day and offered a partial credit for the affected pieces, which was fair. The underlying pipe material was unaffected after cleaning. Delivery was 9 days, which was fast. We would order again but will specify reinforced end protection in the next purchase order.
